Rotonda Thessaloniki

Posted by

Rotunda is a circular building with a rich history dating back to the early 300s.
Initially believed to be part of the palace of Roman Emperor Galerius, recent studies
suggest it was actually built by Constantine the Great as his third mausoleum.
The building’s mosaics, once thought to depict saints and martyrs, are now understood to showcase
the emperor and his courtiers alongside Christian symbols.

3€ ticket price when I visited in November.
It’s the oldest church in Thessaloniki dating back to the 4th century.
The interior of the church definitely seen better days, and doesn’t have much to offer.
However, the some of the surviving original mosaics can still be seen on the roof which is
pretty incredible. The structure was turned into a mosque during Ottoman rule so there’s an minaret beside the church too. I still think the ticket price is fair considering how rich in history
the Rotunda is even there’s not much to see inside now.
